How multiple mines (Orica) lifted throughput through automated fragmentation analytics

FRAGTrack measures PSD at the shovel/crusher to close the loop with blasting. Continuous feedback reduces energy per tonne.

Context

Fragmentation assessment was done manually and infrequently, often delayed by sampling constraints. This created gaps in understanding of blast performance and limited the ability to optimize downstream processes. A continuous measurement approach was needed.

Solution

Automated AI-based vision systems were installed at shovels and crushers to capture particle-size distributions truck-by-truck. Data was logged and visualized to support drill-and-blast and processing teams. This provided continuous, high-resolution fragmentation insight.

Results

Continuous monitoring improved throughput and energy efficiency by enabling faster adjustment of blasting and crushing parameters. Real-time PSD tracking enhanced decision-making and reduced oversize issues.
