How Glencore Kidd Mine saved energy through Ventilation on Demand

RTLS and gas sensors trigger airflow changes by level and zone. Mines report significant savings and better air quality.

Context

Ventilation consumed a significant portion of the mine’s energy budget, while safety requirements demanded precise airflow control. Static ventilation settings were inefficient and sometimes inadequate.

Solution

A Ventilation-on-Demand (VoD) system was implemented using tracking data and sensors to regulate airflow dynamically. The system adjusted ventilation based on location and activity levels.

Results

The mine achieved notable energy savings and improved air quality. Case studies highlighted enhanced safety while reducing ventilation-related operating costs.

Data Inputs

RTLS tracking, gas sensors, airflow/pressure
